GPA Fun Facts
Recently I have been asked many questions regarding the most recent report card and GPA.  Here is some information pertaining to GPA that hopefully will clear up a few things:
  • The GPA printed on the most recent report card that went home on 1/13/12 is your GPA for the second quarter only.  It is not your 1st semester GPA.  State eligibility requirements require schools to print the quarter GPA on report cards.
  • There are two types of GPA, weighted and non-weighted.  A weighted GPA takes into account any honors classes that you may be taking and gives you extra points if you are doing well.  Non-weighted is your GPA on a regular 4.0 scale and does not take into consideration your honors classes.
  • Your official school transcript will always have your semester GPA on it, both weighted and non-weighted.

Welcome to a new year and a new semester!  Now that the dust has settled from all the schedule changes it's time to get back to blogging!
Credit Correction
When I came around and spoke to all the FX Homerooms, I mistakenly gave out some wrong information.  This applies to those students who took Algebra I in the 8th grade.   Algebra I in the 8th grade does count as a high school credit, but it does not count as a math credit.  It counts as an elective credit.  The class of 2015 needs 4 credits of math to graduate.  Every Freshmen will need to take 4 years of math.  I apologize if this has caused any confusion.  The rest of the credit breakdown is as follows:
English - 4 credits
Math - 4 credits
Science - 3 credits
Social Studies 3 credits
Fine Art - 1 credit
Computer - .5 credit
P.E. - .5 credit
Health - .5 credit
Electives - 4.5 credits
TOTAL = 21 credits

First semester exam exemption rules!
To be exempt from an exam you must be passing the class and have two or less days absent.
(2 half days = 1 full day, tardy 3 times = 1 full day)
You may only be exempt from one exam.  If you are eligible, choose wisely!   Good luck freshmen!

Ok, it looks as though I have lost most of my former posts, mostly from the months of October and beginning of November.  Until I can figure out what happened I guess I will start again.
This week I have been visiting FX Homerooms and reviewing graduation requirements.  Here they are in a nutshell for the class of 2015:
You need 21 credits to graduate.  Year long classes are worth 1 credit and semester classes are worth .5 of a credit.  P.E. is the exception, all gym classes are worth .25 of a credit.  The breakdown of credits that are required are as follows:
- 4 credits each of Math and English (8 total)
- 3 credits each of Science and Social Studies (6 total)
- 1 credit of Fine Art (1 total)
- .5 credit each of Computer App, Health, and P.E. (1.5 total)
The above mentioned requirements add up to 16.5 credits.  You will need to earn 4.5 elective credits to reach 21.  Freshmen - please stop by and see me if you have questions after I have spoken to your HR.  The best time to visit is during  your homeroom or if you have a study hall.

The first FX Town Hall meeting will take place on Thursday, September 29 during HR 4B.  During this first meeting, Mr Mauro and Mr. Stratton will cover a variety of topics including hall passes, cafeteria behavior, and student conflicts.  This first Town Hall meeting will be the first of many that freshmen students will be required to attend.  Future Town Hall meeting topics will include underage alcohol and tobacco consumption and laws that cover cell phone usage such as texting and inappropriate use of a cell phone.

As we roll a little further into this inaugural year of the Freshmen Experience, I thought it would be helpful if students were aware of the policy surrounding dropping a class during various times of a semester.

- A student who wishes to drop a class from the beginning of the semester to the 4 1/2 week mark can do so without a penalty.
- A student who wishes to drop a class from the 4  1/2 week mark to the 9 week mark may do so and receive a WP (withdraw passing) or a WF (withdraw failing).  A mark of WP or WF will not count against a student's GPA.
- A student who wishes to drop a class after the 9 week mark into a semester, for whatever reason,  will receive a letter grade of F for that class.  This F will be counted in a student's GPA.

All of the above provided information should be carefully considered when you are thinking about dropping a class.  Contact your friendly neighborhood school counselor if you have any questions!

Freshmen Focus Groups -  Mr. Stratton will be meeting with freshmen students from the FX during various times throughout the school year.  These groups will meet for the purpose gathering student input on how things are going in the FX.  What is going well?  What needs improvement?  These groups will meet during homeroom.  Please see Mr. Stratton if you are interested in participating.
