The Edgewood/Butler Tech FFA Chapter is putting on their annual Cardboard City event on November 22, 2011.  The purpose of Cardboard City is to create awareness about homelessness in our community.  In addition, the program raises money for families in our community, which is used to support them with food, utility bills, Christmas gifts, clothes, etc.  Students have to raise a minimum of $75 to participate in the event.  This money should come from donations or sponsorships either from individuals or businesses.

While at Cardboard City, the students will be experiencing homelessness firsthand by sleeping in a box, going dumpster diving, and playing the game ‘Reality’.  ‘Reality’ is a game that was created for the students to go through an everyday life situation in which they will be working a job and juggling a family to try to avoid becoming homeless. During school on the 22nd, the students will be attending an assembly to better understand the concept of homelessness.  We will be having guest speakers at the assembly speaking about situations and life-changing events.

This event is a great opportunity for students  to realize what is going on in their world everyday.  It’s an eye-opening experience to go through and learn what the homeless have to do in their everyday lives.   Also, it’s a wonderful feeling to know you’re helping all of these people and raising awareness for a good cause.  Students need to have donations collected and turn in their registration materials to Ms. Warner no later than November 4th.

Anyone with questions should contact Ms. Warner in room 123, or by phone (867-7425, ext. 2124) or email (warnerk@edgewood.k12.oh.us).
