Scratch

I'm so excited to share with you the activities of the FX students in the computer lab. For the past several weeks we have been studying computer programming. Using a free program called Scratch the students have discovered a programming language that makes it easy to create their own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art. I believe that as my students created these projects they were learning important mathematical and computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. Plus, having fun!

We began our studies by going through several Scratch Challenges. These challenges were designed by Scratch to scaffold students learning of the basic concepts of Scratch. My original plan included walking them through several other steps of Scratch, however, once my students had the basic concepts down, they soared!

Honestly, I wish I had time and space to share with you all 136 of my students creations. They would amaze you. I would encourage you to ask your son/daughter to show you their Scratch project soon. Remind them they have all uploaded them to their It's Learning page.

It's Interim Time

Your favorite FX student should be bringing home their Interim reports today. We believe that cooperation between home and school is the key to success! This report is to show you the progress of your son/daughter while there is still time for improvement.

The FX faculty will be available for parent conferences on Thursday evening, February 16. If you would like to schedule an appointment with team of teachers who work with your son or daughter please call 513-867-7425 ext. 2139.

Mr. Holland

Mr. Holland's classes performed monologues on the stage in the auditorium as they prepare to study drama. The best performances from each class will be voted on by fellow students and awards will be given out next week. We have very talented students!

Mrs. Rees

Ratio and proportion are important applications of Geometry. In Mrs. Rees’ geometry classes, students made the connection between algebraic and geometric uses of these ideas, which included investigating scale models and making scale drawings.

The properties of ratio and proportion will be used to study similarity in the coming weeks. Students can look forward to learning about similarity in triangles through the use of Online Active Math and Geometer’s Sketch Pad technologies. They will also learn about indirect measurement with similar triangles by completing an investigation first with mirrors, then with their own shadow (weather permitting).

Mr. Boyle

Students in Mrs. Phares' class have been working with the program Scratch.

EHS FX House Project
Honors Geometry will be creating house plans for specific lots in Trenton, Ohio. Students will have to follow city planning codes/regulations. Students will give presentations throughout the project, create informative videos and a project group website along with creating 3-D representations using Google SketchUp.

Trenton's City Manager John Jones and Zoning Director Bill Jones will be "expert" resources throughout the project along with the Quandrel Group, led by Nate Minnich-Weber & Todd Clevinger (currently building the new high school)

MAPS
Students in Mrs. Phares' computer applications classroom have been exploring the truly amazing capabilities of Google Maps. One thing they discovered was the ability to make their own tours. To show their understanding students were asked to design a tour of 15 places that were related. The interesting thing was how the personality of the students started to shine through these projects.

An Amazing Week of Learning

The Edgewood chapter of the FCCLA ( Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) sponsored a Real Money/Real World event. Real financial/life simulation for our FX students. After months of planning Mrs. Gregory and the event student coordinators presented a incredible successful day.

The program gave students a real life scenario, where they had to budget and maintain a household with an assigned income. Students were given (by a random drawing) a career/job, an income and a predetermined household with dependents.

With the generous help of local businesses and volunteers our students saw how an occupation affects income, how to budget and how finances can quickly deplete when paying for the necessities of life.

Odyssey and Romeo and Juliet

Good books are always a pleasure to read; however there is something about a cup of hot chocolate, a cold winters day and a good book.The Edgewood FX Language Arts teachers believe that reading and literacy skills provide students with the keys to lifelong learning. The more students read, the better readers they will become. Every effort should be made both at school and at home to get students to do as much reading as possible.Our classes are diving into the classics. Mr. Pierce's classes are reading Romeo and Juliet and Mr. Holland's classes are finishing up The Odyssey.

We know that these books are not light reading. These are classic novels. Many times they are not easy to follow. However, we feel it is important in the development of a young persons mind.

There is help. The web site Shmoop is the first place we would go. In their words "Shmoop will make you a better lover (of literature, history, life)." When you take a minute to look around Shmoop, you will be simply delighted! These are not your "Mothers Literature Guides"...Shmoop makes learning and writing more fun and relevant for students in the digital age. Both Romeo and Juliet and The Odyssey have literature guides on Shmoop.

Mr. Holland has used the web site Quizlet to design online flashcards for an upcoming quiz.

Happy New Year and Welcome back to School! With the new year comes a new semester. Your son/daughters scheduled should basically be the same with the exceptions of their semester classes. (Computer, PE, Art)

The computer classes have rolled out a new Learning Platform called "It's Learning." The platform is specifically designed to support student-centered learning with extensive project support, individual learning plans, and a full set of multimedia tools for students to use to carry out their education plans. Each student has already set up an online ePortfolio and an individual blog. Our next step is to get our parents accounts so you can become involved in the process. It is a very exciting time in the computer lab!

This weeks guest bloggers are FX students Brittany Marts and Sarah Jones. These are two exceptional students whose hard work pays off with their high achievements.

Hi, my name is BrittanyMarts. I’m currently a freshman at Edgewood High School. I’m very active inextra curricular activates, such as basketball and soccer. There are fewathletes that get the privilege of being a part of a varsity team, especiallyas young as I am. Haley Rutherford, and Jenna Brown are teammates of mine whoalso share in my experience. Chris Allen (wrestling), Tanner Wright (boy’sbasketball), Kayla Hensler, Stephanie Schumacer, Connor McAdams, Hanna Polisini (all swimming) are also lucky student-athletesrepresenting our school at a varsity level. Even being a freshman you areexpected just as much as an upper classmen. Sometimes it is rather difficult tocompete with people up to 4 years older than you, but it is completely worthit. There is nothing better than the feeling of working hard enough to beeligible to play, or compete at that level. Edgewood High School is blessedwith a group of hardworking and determined students; with this the future islimitless.

My name is Sarah Jones, and I am a cheerleader for the Edgewood Boy’s freshman basketball team. I’m oneof the six girls on our team, along with Haley Black, Julie Beach, LaurynWirtley, Ciara Richter, and Scottie Smith. Being a cheerleader doesn’t seemlike a tough job, but it comes with a lot ofpressure! We’re expected to learn 7 dances to perform in front of an audienceat Varsity games, learn more than enough chants to do at our own game, make upour own clever, unique cheers, and still remembering everything when it comesto game time. It all comes together in the end, and we laugh about our mistakes. The challenge is very fun to take on, and it makes the girlscloser as we help each other throughout the season. I absolutely love cheer, I look forward to growing up & helping the new freshman learn everything Edgewood High School cheer has for them. :)

A Visit from Mr. Stratton

A Visit From M. Stratton
This week Mr. Stratton has been visiting FX Homerooms and reviewing graduation requirements. We believe that you, as parents, need to be aware of these requirements also.

All Edgewood students need 21 credits to graduate. Year long classes are worth 1 credit and semester classes are worth .5 of a credit. P.E. is the exception, all gym classes are worth .25 of a credit.

The breakdown of credits that are required are as follows:

- 4 credits each of Math and English (8 total)

- 3 credits each of Science and Social Studies (6 total)

- 1 credit of Fine Art (1 total)

- .5 credit each of Computer App, Health, and P.E. (1.5 total)

The above mentioned requirements add up to 16.5 credits. Students will need to earn 4.5 elective credits to reach 21.

Our second quarter conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, November 29th. Don't miss this opportunity to sit down and discuss the academic achievements of your son or daughter with the team of teachers that work with them daily. Art Show
The FX art faculty, Mrs. Peterson, Mrs. Joseph and Mr. Pletz are proud to present the HIgh School art show. The opening reception will be on Tuesday, December 6th from 6:30-8:00PM. It is free and open to all family and friends. The location of the show will be at the Fitton Arts Center in Hamilton. If you would like more information on this, contact one of the art teachers. Who Would You Invite?

Today I asked my students to tell me who they would invite to their Thanksgiving dinner and why. I believe that often times adults forget just how grown up our kids really are. Many of the submissions look similar, however the students could not see what others were writing.

Logan T If I could invite anyone to Thanksgiving this year it would have to be my grandma who's not with us anymore. She was always happy when the hollidays came around which is one reason I would invite her. She loved it when we would come to have dinner at her house. I just think it would be amazing to see her at least for one more day.

Jennifer W I would invite my grandparents. They passed away years ago. I never got to meet my grandma but I heard that she would love me. I was 6 years old when my grandpa passed away. They both died of lung cancer but I would love to meet my grandma and get to know my grandpa better.

brittany m If I could invite anyone to a thanksgiving dinner, it would be Justin Bieber. I've always wanted to meet Justin Bieber, so he would fall in love with me and we'd get married. Thanksgiving would be the perfect oppertunity. I'd make him sing his new AMAZING christmas cd. He would meet my family, and we could live happily ever after. That would be the perfect Thanksgiving! :)

juliann s I would invite my aunt because she really can't come and if she could come my mom would really like that.

Alexander T If I could invite anyone to Thanksgiving this year it would be my grandfather becaouse it's the first Thanksgiving he's not going to be here. He loved spending time with family at Thanksgiving and loved the food. It would also be nice to see him again.

Ashley S If I could bring one person to Thanksgiving it would be my grandma who passed away a few years ago. I would bring her because she loved eating with us on hollidays & she also loved making the food. I really would love too see her one more time.

TImothy F if I could have any one over for thanksgiving I would invite my great gandpaw. He died at the age of 102 earlyer this year. He was a vary important person to me. He was a fire cheif and I got to go see the truck He drove at one of their meetings.

Sara G I would invite my grandma. I would invite her because thanksgiving was her favorite holiday. We always ate at her house and she cooked all the food homemade.

Savannah S The person that I would invite to Thanksgiving would be my grandpa. He died a couple of years ago and we miss him alot. Him being over for one more Thanksgiving would be really surreal and it would make my mom really happy. Its been hard not having him there, and he would be the one I would invite.

Madison M I would invite my great grandma who lives in Indianna to Thanksgiving because we never get to see her much and she always makes Thanksgiving and Christmas better when she is around.

sydney m If i could bring anyone I would bring my grandma who died when I was 6 so that i could get to know her, because I didnt really know her at all.

Drake C If I had one person to bring to Thanksgiving it would be wes welker Wide resever for the Patriots. The reason I would want him is because I look up to him. He is one of the littlest Wide resevers in the NFL. He is a tuf wide resever, like i said one of the littlest guys in the NFL but is not scared to take hits by them be line backers over the middle. I look up to him and he makes me wanna work harder to get were he is at.

MacKenzie K Two people I would invite to Thanksgiving is my Grandma and Grandpa Gray. My grandma passed away a year ago on November 4th and my grandpa passed away back in October of '01. My family and I have misssed them more than anything and would give anything to spend one last thanksgiving with them. Even though they are not physically with us now, we know they always are watching down on us as we enjoy the holidays.

David M If I could invite anyone I would invite the best cook in the world so I could have a very good Thanksgiving. I would also see if I could hire them to cook all of my food for a year.

Savanna R if I could invite anyone to thanksgiving I would invite my grandma because she died about 2 years ago and before she died we would always have thanksgiving at her house.

Elizabeth SI would invite my brother because he is not able to celebrate it with us because he has to stay at college for break.

Megan W I would invite my mom, dad, my brother nick, my two sister's brittany and lindsay, and little brother tyler (: i want my family to be together as a familt like they used to be before they got divorced and every one needs to be a family over the holidays (:

Cody K I would bring back my Grandpaw. he died in september of 01. I barley got to know him/ remember him because I was only 5. And my little brother who was born a week before he died wouls actually get to meet him for basically the first time. I barley remember him, when he died my brothers were 2 and the other was 1 week old when our Grandpaw passed away. So none of use remember him very well.

Taylor C I would invite my Grandma Marylin who passed away about five years ago and also my Grandpa who is suffering from alzheimers. I always spent the Holidays with them and I would do anything to have one more.

Megan S If I could invite two people to thanksgiving, it would be my great grandpa and my grandpa. My great grandpa passed away when i was only three, and we were very close. My grandpa is still alive today. I haven't seen him in a while. I only see him about once a year due to things that has occured in the past. I miss them both very much.

dj C If I could invite anyone to thanksgiveing i think iit would be Cartman and Kenny from south park because are funny and it would be hilarious.

sydney p If I could invite anyone to my Thanksgiving dinner I would invite, my Great Grandma. I would invite her because I know my mom used to be really close with her & my mom would do anything to have her back in her life. I would also invite her because I always hear about how great of a person she was & I never got to meet her. I would invite her because she lived in a two bedroom house and raised 5 boys & I would love to know how she did all of what she did. Lastly, I know how much she meant to my mom & how much it would mean to my mom to have her back in her life for just a day.

Nikki C If I could invite anyone to thanksgiving i would invite my great-grandma. She passed away last year on my birthday and i miss her sooooo much! Another person that i would invite would be my brother and his wife and my baby nephew. My brother is in the army and he is stationed in hawaii now and he has been there for almost three years now and I havent seen him in a while and i miss him a lot!

Taylor H I would probably invite my uncle. He passed away after being in a car accident. He came into my life in June of 2005, and left in april of 2009. My family missed him alot, and the few years I did have hime in my life was good, and he always ate everything with a spoon, and to be able to make laughs about it for one more year that would be the best gift i could ask for. Danny A I would invite some one thats famous so it could be on the news. Also a bunch of random family members so that the famous person doesn't feel like hes in a house with like 4 people. It would be great because my family would be together and happy.

I Would Invite My Little Brother , John Coffman III . He Died At Birth , All Of His Organs Weren't Working , And He Was Way Too Small To Put Him Under Surgery , And Nothing Else Could Be Done . . That Would Make My Entire Family Be Very Thankful , Especially My Mother .

Thomas s If I could invite any one to thanksgiving it would be my dad's dad because he died when my dad was in highschool, and I really like to meet him and get to know him, since I never met him.

Annabelle B If I could invite anyone to Thanksgiving dinner, it would be my little brother John Michael. He died before my mom gave birth to him and I think it would be really special to get to see him and talk with him and find out the kind of man he would have been.

Nathan M I would invite Dwayne Wade. I would invite him because he is my idol. He is the best player in the NBA. I have always wanted to meet him.

Ronnie Z If I could invite anyone to thanksgiving it would be my grandpa becuase him and my dad were so close and when he passed away my dad was so depressed and i would love to see my dad happy again.

Emily H If i could invite any one to thanksgiving it would be my family from Boston because we don't get to see them that much, and i think it would be cool to get to see them and and there children again.

Matthew C If I could invite anyone to Thanksgiving it would be entire family, because my entire family isn't able to get all together all that much. It would be nice to have them all together for a day. Thats what its all about giving thanks for what we have and one of the best things we have os our family.

Dave M If I could invite anyone AND have them come? It'd be the current President, Obama. Some don't like him, some hate him, some think he is a bad president, but we all have opinions. I have a high opinion of him. I would love to be able to talk to him freely about the country and similar things, not that my opinion would matter really, to be of any true substance to such an important person.

Nick J If I could invite anyone to thanksgiving I would invite Gene Simmons because i always wanted to meet him.

Mariah S I would invite my whole family because they live in a lot of different places in the country and we don't get to get together that much.

Rebecca M I would invite my whole family to thanksgiving because i never get to see them at one time, it's always different parts of my family at different times and places so its always a long day on Thanksgiving.

Dalton J If I could invite anybody to Thanksgiving it would be George Washington. I choose him because he is just awesome. He is the reason we have democracy and have presidents instead of having a dictatorship or a monarchy.

jenna s If I could invite one person to Thanksgiving i would invite my grandma. She died in 2007 and I know that the whole family would love to see her and have one more holiday with her.

Cassidy H If I could invite anyone to Thanksgiving, I would invite my great grandpa. He just recently past away a little over a month ago and I would invite him becasue I miss him and I want him there.

Bradley B If I could invite anyone to Thanksgiving, it would be my cousin Adam. He died while fighting overseas. It would be interesting to know more about him. Also I would want to know what kind of person he is because I didn't know him all that well.

Jenna B I would invite Jesus. I know that He is always with me, but I just think it would be so amazing to be able to see Him and have a real conversation with Him.

Isabelle M If I could invite anyone, it would be all of my family and all of them get along. Some of my family live in Texas and Washington, so I would love all of them to be at my grandmothers and enjoy a dinner together.

Adam H If I could invite anyone to Thanksgiving it would be my whole entire family. I would invite them because I have so many people in my family that i dont know because they are spread out all over the country. That would be my choice.

kayla T If I could choose anyone to come to Thanksgiving it would be my aunt and uncle that live in Texas because they are awesome and i haven't seen them in 5 years. I miss them.

Jeffrey S I would invite my whole family, because we don't get to see each other that much.

tyler t If I could invite anyone, it would be All of my family because I never get to see them at all, because they all live so far away ( down south and in the west), my family always gets along when we are all together.

Miranda H Some people I would invite to my Thanksgiving is my boyfriend , and my family I never get to see who live in other states or far away from where I live.

kenny W Two people I would invite to Thanksgiving are God and Satan (the devil)l so they can make up. I would also invite Jerry Springer in case GOD and satan get into a fight and he can solve it!

Randi S I would invite my friend Megan because she's like a sister to me and she's really fun to be around. other than that i really don't have anybody i would want to invite.

Sierra M The one person I would invite is my family members in different states because I dont get to see all of my family very often. Also I would invite my dad so I would be able to meet him and get to know him.

Kennedy Sheehy I would invite my friends from Middletown, because I miss them & they're cool like that & I love them.

Abby B If I could invite any to Thanksgiving it would be Lady Gaga. I think it would be really interesting to talk to her in peron. She's such a different individual that i'd love the chance to see her and just hear the things she had to say.

Brie L I would bring my friend Jacob because he would make thanksgiving a lot better for me and he is always fun to be around. My mom considers him part of the family and he can always have a fun time.

Nathan G I would invite a turkey so I could eat it...

Austin M I'd invite my aunt because I havent seen her since 2002, 2003, something like that she died in a car accident and nobody else cause I dont like anybody else.

Valerie J I would invite my friend from Florida because I only seen her for a week and I had to leave to go back home and i miss her terribly.

Austin M My Grandma. She died in 2007. I would invite her because I would want to see her again.

jade m I would invite my great grandma. She died when I was 3, and I'd invited her to give her the chance to see what has happened since she died.

Courtney L I would invite my grandmother back to eat and spend time with. She passed away less than a year ago. She lost her battle with ovarian cancer on November 30, 2010. She always used to make my favorite cake and no one could make it better than her.

Marissa A My great aunt. She died last year from cancer. I miss her. <3

Ryan W I would invite my grandma. I would invite her because she lives in Texas so I can never see her. I would also invite my aunt and who who also live in Texas too.

Megan C If I could invite on person to thanks giving dinner it would be Shaylynn Hilman. because she is is one of my friends. and she is funny.

Stephen W I would invite my mamaw because she died in 1995 in a car wreck and I never got to meet her.

Rachel F I would invite my uncle Jabe. He was the best cook ever but died in 1990 sadly. I never got to meet him but everyone talks about his food and how he was always in high spirits.

I would invite them because since i moved I really haven't had time to visit them because were all so busy. Inviting them to thanksgiving would be a great way to catch up on what's been going on with them.

We are both in band and she even played the same song I did at around the same time, at a school concert, in two different states. Until a few days ago, at a funeral, we haven't seen each other since we were 3 or 4.

Please take the time to review the report with your son or daughter.

By the time our students reach high school, they’ve become more independent and responsible. However, the FX faculty still believes there is a need for communication between school and home. Academic success is an important part of your child's future. There are many opportunities for them and we want to make sure that you are involved every step of the way. We believe the more parents know about what’s going on at our school, the more opportunities they will have for staying involved in their student's activities.

Conferences
Our first nine week conference was a success! We were able to meet with 19 parents. We are looking to increase that number this nine weeks. The conference night is scheduled for Tuesday, November 29. You can schedule a time to meet with the team by contacting our counselor, Chris Stratton, at 867-7425 ext 2139.

Day of the Dead

El Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is celebrated in many Spanish speaking countries.
It sounds kind of morbid, but actually this is a happy holiday where people remember their
loved ones who have died. On November 1st, the loved ones who died as children are remembered
and on November 2nd, the loved ones who died as adults are remembered.
Almost every home will have an ofrenda set up for their deceased loved ones. These ofrendas
hold a photo of the deceased as well as many of their favorite items/foods from when they were
alive.
Señora Baker's students celebrated El Día de los Muertos by making projects they shared with
the class. The students got to choose either an art project/decoration, or a traditional food
item such as sugar or chocolate skulls, mole, cakes, etc. Señora Reams' students will celebrate
on Monday, November 7th.

The FX Gives Back

We believe that the satisfaction and pride that will come when our students begin to help others is an important reason to commit ourselves to community service projects. Our hope is that these projects will help strengthen our FX community and help to teach responsibility not only for themselves, but also for other people.

In November we will be holding a canned food drive. We are asking students to bring in their donations throughout the month of November. We understand that students have been participating in food drives throughout their school years. This year we are encouraging our students to perform odd jobs to earn extra money so they can go to the grocery and purchase canned goods for their contribution. Do you need your car washed or your leaves raked? It's a win-win situation.

Our plans for December include a glove tree. We are asking students to help decorate our FX tree with hats, gloves and scarfs.

Google Sketch Up:
Have you been hearing your student talk about Google Sketch Up? The Computer Application classes have finished their unit and I believe the students really enjoyed learning this amazing software. Google Sketchup is a free 3D drawing program from google that makes 3D drawing simple and easy. You can download the program, free of charge here.

Students chose to create several different projects. They were all fantastic. I wish I had room to show them all to you, however I have chosen a few of my favorites.

Savannah S's favorite past time is reading. She designed this room to spend her free time in. I would love to kick back with a good book here. How about you?

REMINDER: Chamber to host meet the Candidates night

Wednesday, November 2, from 7 - 9 pm the Chamber of Commerce of Trenton will host a "Meet the Candidates" night at Edgewood High School in the auditorium. Mr. Bill Triick, President of the Chamber, will be the moderator for the evening event. Candidates will be afforded the opportunity to discuss their views on education and Edgewood City Schools. There are seven candidates running for two open seats on the Edgewood Board of Education.

Our spanish student teacher, Eli Johnson, is going above and beyond with the students of the Freshmen Experience. He is teaching them how to Salsa. It has been a real pleasure to watch Eli during his student teaching experience. Under the supervision of Terri Baker we have watched Eli become an original, innovative, dedicated and fun teacher.

Mr. Pierce's classes spent some time last week dissecting poetry. The mini-unit culminated in a Poetry Analysis Challenge. In this challenge, students from each class teamed up to see who could locate and explain poetic devices such as symbolism, alliteration, personification, metaphors, etc. within a single poem. The team that best analyzed the poem was deemed our Master of Poetry. All of the classes did very well, but the winning class was able to pull out an amazing score by identifying and explaining 42 aspects of analysis in the poem.

A Successful Parent Teacher Conference

Parent Teacher Conferences
The Edgewood Freshmen FX held the first parent teacher conference of the school year on Thursday evening. The staff was very pleased with the success of the evening. The two teams were able to meet with 19 parents which is a substantial amount compared to past years attendance. We were able to discuss students moving up into honors classes to raise the bar/challenge, strategies for teams and parents to work together for success of the student, important health information as well as a few personal issues. The teams now feel empowered to continue working towards academic success for our students.

Students Teaching Students through Skype
The students in Mrs. Phares' computer class are becoming experts on the Google 3d modeling software Google SketchUp. Wednesday morning the computer classes Skyped in with the Madison computer classes to share their knowledge about SketchUp. The Madison students had not been trained on the software so our students took the lead and became the teachers.

Our girls ended a successful soccer season this week. The freshmen girls would like to extend their thanks to the seniors and to coach Adams. We thought you would enjoy seeing how nice they look when they dress up on game day.

This week we have two exciting projects to share with you. Students in the computer lab worked on a project that had to do with SAT words and Green Screen Technology. Each student was assigned a different vocabulary word from the SAT list. They then researched the word and wrote a sentence. The next step was to compose themselves into a green screen photo.

The next project came from Mr. Pierce's language Arts Students. His students created narrative comics to demonstrate their knowledge of characterization, dialog, plot line, voice, and theme.

It's Count Week!

The Ohio Department of Education designates the first week of October as “Count Week” for Ohio schools. During this week, daily student attendance is recorded and reported to the state. The attendance numbers are used to determine how much state funding money local districts will receive for the year. Schools receive “credit” for every student who attends during Count Week. Unexcused absences and vacation absences cause a reduction in funding. If an absence is unavoidable, please remember to report your child’s absence to the school on the day of the absence and send a written excuse in on the following day. Ms. Hamilton’s Physical Science classes wrapped up their introductory Science Skills Unit with a “Tallest Tower” lab. The students used their knowledge and skills of problem solving, scientific reasoning, observation/inference, scientific ways of thinking, and the scientific method to build the tallest tower possible. The catch was that each tower had to be freestanding! Each lab group was given 2 pieces of computer paper, three paper clips, 35 cm of scotch tape and could use scissors. Some towers were very impressive…and some have an asterisk by their measurement because the “freestanding” requirement didn’t last very long!

Students in Mrs. Phares' computer lab have been working on a green screen project that will be ready to share with you next week. I thought you would enjoy seeing some of the "behind the scene" action.

This is how we take a math test in the FX!

It's hard to believe that we are half way through the first quarter of the 2011-2012 school year. Your son or daughter will be bringing home their midterm report today. Please take a few minutes to review the report with them. We believe that parent–teacher conferences are an important component of ongoing home–school communication and family involvement in children's education. This week during our professional development time we examined the results of the 2010-2011 8th grade Ohio Achievement Test. We are very proud to share with you that we were above the state standards in reading, math and science.

This week in Mrs. Dreger's Social Studies classes students have been completing their "Enlightenment Projects." I have asked Kayla Toon, a ninth grade student, to explain the project.

"For the Enlightenment project we made the choice of an activity from the list Mrs. Dreger gave us, I created a game and a crossword. Then we had to base the project around the Enlightenment Period, or the period in which many ideas came along and caused people to have different opinions."

My amazing students this week are Tristen and Taylor Chenoweth. The amazing thing about these twins is not that they are both exceptional students, they are, but they are friends. It has been so much fun to get to know them and watch how they relate to each other. They truly have a great time together. Taylor tells me the best thing about going to school with her brother is that she knows she always has someone there to back her up. Tristen tells me that he enjoys watching his sister grow up and become smarter! How great would it be to be a twin?

The Freshmen FX has created another way for parents and students to stay up to date on school related news and activities. The schools have joined Twitter, as @EHSFX. Tweets will include information about athletic events, school meetings and important dates and other activities. For example, among the first tweets were notices about the Freshmen football and volleyball games. We believe this is one of several ways Edgewood can fulfill its goal of utilizing all possible avenues to keep students, parents and city residents informed about what goes on in their schools.

A Three Way Partnership

We believe that our students will achieve most and be happiest at school when there is a partnership, understanding and communication between home and school. We view this partnership as three-way, involving the school, the parents/guardians and the student. Angel C

This week I had a chance to get to know Miss Angel. Angel is a transfer student from China. She moved from China to Trenton in October 2009. She attended a private boarding school Monday through Friday. It is interesting to hear the differences in our systems. The one thing that impressed me was the fact that they require their students to have three exercise sessions daily. They have some type of planned activities from 6:30 AM to 8:00 PM.

I asked Angel what she missed about China and what was her favorite thing about living in the United States. Her comment was "It's not what I like or dislike, it's about what exists in my reality." I know Angel enough that she is going to make herself happy no matter where she is.

Angel has mastered the art of origami and paper cutting and is now working on beading. It is very rare to see her without headsets in her ears. I have always been curious as to what type of music she listens to and she tells me it's a little bit of Chinese and a little bit of English.

The Edgewood FX is so fortunate to have Angel in our class and her teachers and classmates are all very proud of her and continue to learn from her.

What an amazing week at the Edgewood Freshmen Experience! Our students and teachers have all settled into their routines and are beginning their journeys to success!

Last week I introduced you to Tyler T, a civil war historian. This week I would like you to meet Kayla T and Kyra W.

Kayla loves to read and has designed a blog to share her love of books. This was not a classroom assignment, just something she thought she would do on her own. I am sure she would appreciate if you were to leave her a comment! You can read her blog here.

Kyra has her heart set on becoming a veterinarian after she graduates from High School. Her love for animals just can't wait that long so she has decided to become an animal rescuer. Kyra has rescued close to 10 animals. She was able to talk her parents into letting her keep the kitten.

Student Teachers: The Freshmen FX is excited to have four student teachers assigned to us. These four awesome individuals bring our students an excitement for education and learning. We are learning just as much from them as they are learning from us.

Eli Johnson is Señora Baker's student teacher for the semester. He is a 2008 graduate of Middletown High School and a current senior at Miami University in Oxford. Currently living in Oxford, Eli enjoys singing, playing racquetball and attends the Oaks Community Church in Middletown.
Eli has traveled abroad to Mexico City numerous times and studied abroad in Costa Rica this summer. He is very excited to have his student teaching experience be here at Edgewood High School and is already loving the community and students!

Mrs. Schick is a senior at Miami University (class of 2012) majoring in Secondary Mathematics Education (grades 7-12).

She is currently a student teacher here at Edgewood High School in the Freshman Experience, student teaching with Mr. Boyle.

Austin Neal is a senior at Miami University (class of 2012), studying for a bachelors in mild to moderate special education (K-12).

Austin is currently a student teacher Edgewood High School in the Freshman Experience, as an Intervention Specialist alongside Mrs. Rose Harvey and Mr Boyle.

Austin looks forward to getting to know the students at Edgewood High School, and hopes that he learns from them as much as they learn from him.

Devon Rollbuhler will be student teaching in your son/daughter’s Freshman World History Class. She is a Senior at Miami University and will be assisting in the classroom for the fall semester. Under the supervision of Ms. Dreger, she will begin taking on more teaching responsibilities throughout the semester. Devon is looking forward to working with the students at Edgewood High School and is hoping to make your child’s learning experience fun and exciting!

Welcome Week One

The kickoff to the Freshmen Experience was held Wednesday night at Edgewood High School. Hundreds of parents and incoming freshmen turned out for the first annual event, offering an opportunity for the new ninth graders to get acquainted with the high school. Students had a chance to look over their schedule, find their classrooms and lockers, and meet their new teachers, counselors and principals.

The beginning of the year has proved to be successful for the Edgewood Freshmen Experience. The staff has been treated to an amazing group of students who are ready to learn. We are all positive this is going to be an exciting year.

Our Freshmen class is filled with some fascinating students. Today I had a chance to chat with Tyler T. Tyler has a fascination with Civil War history and on his own he used the Internet to locate a reenactment unit. He has joined the unit as a confederate Marine. Tyler tells me that he has been in more then 20 reenactments and has no plans to stop this "rather expensive hobby." We are proud to have Tyler as part of our 2011-2012 Freshmen Academy.
